Building a Robust Cloud Disaster Recovery Plan

Learn how to design a cloud-native disaster recovery strategy with RTO/RPO targets that keep your business online through any outage.

Why Disaster Recovery Cannot Be an Afterthought

Every business that depends on digital infrastructure is vulnerable to outages. Hardware failures, regional cloud provider incidents, ransomware attacks, and accidental deletions all pose existential threats. A formal Disaster Recovery (DR) plan is non-negotiable.

RTO and RPO: The Two Critical Metrics

  • RTO (Recovery Time Objective): The maximum acceptable time for your systems to be offline after a failure.
  • RPO (Recovery Point Objective): The maximum acceptable data loss measured in time (e.g., backups every 4 hours means up to 4 hours of data could be lost).
Architecture Tip A Pilot Light DR strategy keeps a minimal version of your core systems running in a secondary region, reducing RTO from hours to minutes.

Multi-Region Active-Passive Setup

In an active-passive configuration, your primary region handles all traffic normally. Automated health checks monitor its status every 30 seconds. If the primary region fails, DNS failover routes traffic to the passive secondary region within minutes.
